A beautiful selfish world!!!

The last 3 days that I spent in Delhi have been quite a learning experience. Not that what i learnt was something new... it was just that the learning became deeply embeded in me. Wanted to share anyways...

You know I always admired people who cared for others. Respected the love a mother has for her child, considered it to be the most selfless act. Although not in the same league, also admired the care given by those who are close to us. I have been fortunate to have known a few selfless people myself. Their nature touched me. They always used to put others before themselves. I always desired to be like them and always thought that is what would bring in the ultimate happiness.

However my Delhi experience (cant share due to personal reasons!) gave me an altogether different perspective on this topic. I realised that there is nothing that can termed as selfless. We all basically are ...selfish! Yes all of us.

When somebody says that I care for the other person, come to think of it, isn’t he basically doing it for himself. I mean to put it very bluntly..... for his own happiness. So there exists nothing that can be called as selfless. We all have an ulterior objective. We always expect something back in return for what we do. Whether its caring for people close to you or giving something to the society, spending time with someone who is in need, all are selfish acts as the doer consciously or subconsciously does expect something from others. This expectation may not necessarily be from the other person to whom the care/help is directed but even from a third party. Don't we expect god to be kind to us for the good we do!

But pls. don't get me wrong its not that I'm trying to say that we all are selfish and that's why we all are bad. No.

Therin lies the fundamental assumption. What i am trying to say is that there is nothing wrong in being selfish as it is made out to be in our culture!! Being selfish is okay, its perfectly normal. If you understand the basic philosophy that all of us are selfish then probably we’ll be peace with the fact that being selfish is not all that bad.

Its basically how you look at it. Perspectives.....

But then another question arises . Does that mean that a person who cares for others and helps him compared to a person who puts the someone down for getting a promotion are the same even though by the above mentioned logic they both are selfish..... Not really

Because there is a major difference here. And that is with the outcome of the act/behaviour. If the outcome is positive and is directed at someones betterment then that kind of selfishness is good for humanity and should be welcomed however if the outcome is negative or is directed to harm or bring down somebody then its an act which should be completely detested. Such acts should be avoided

So the whole point in the blog was to make myself and others who would agree with my point of view to realize that we all are selfish. ALL of us. Even a mother's relation with her child is one of selfishness (expectations from her child...) and so is a father's with his son , a husband with his wife. But the other important point is that being selfish is not really bad. It’s the outcome which needs to be probed into and if its positive then it’s a boon to humanity.

So lets all celebrate selfishness with a positive outcome

Welcome to a beautiful selfish world
