Living for the moment....

I had this realisation last night, wanted to share...
All our life we live in the past or the future but not in the present. We spend all our time constantly thinking about what has happened or will happen in our life.
We ponder over things which happened a minute ago, thirty minutes ago, a month, a year ago or even decades ago OR we might just be thinking about something which is about to happen, ten minutes later, thirty mins, one month later, a year ahead and so on. And thus we spend all our time analysing our past or the future.

And in doing you would realise that our relationship with our present moment (which is actually the only reality) thus is actually dependent on our past or future happenings!

So would i be wrong in saying that we are all living in the past or future.
This i believe is the root cause of pain, fear, anxiety and many such emotions which bother us. It does not let us live our life the way we would like it to be.

So it would help if we realise sooner than later that the only reality in this world; in our lives is this moment, NOW.

And we need to be fully aware that we need to live this moment 'as is' and not as a function of our past or future. We need to appreciate this moment which god has given us. And only by doing so can we free ourself from all the negative emotions bothering us; pain, anxiety, fear, etc.

So the question then remains. How does one live in the present?

For this you need to make this moment your friend (friend here is used as a metaphor for the present moment). And when you do so your relationship with him will not be dependent on the relationships you share with your other friends (which can be past or future moments). You will then treat him as an independant sans any percieved baggage.

I know it is extremely difficult to implement this (to live in the present). This is because all our lives we have been conditioned to a particluar way of thinking (can read my earlier post 'Joys of experiencing pain' for more on this). But this is a war. You against your ego, which is constantly trying to live in the past or feed on the happening of the future.

And believe me. The first battle would be won when you actually become aware of the fact that you actually live in the past or future and not the present. And when you do, there be an internal awarness which will lead you to act.

And so whenever you realise that you are thinking about the past or future, you need to say to yourself "I will not allow my past or future to control my present, i am going to live for NOW"
This will help you pull back on your thoughts which were bothering you. However they may reappear the very next moment. But don't worry. This is not a one time thing. Depending on how strong your ego is (which will constantly resist yor desire about living 'for the moment' and bring back some strong memories for you to ponder over) you would need to do this again and again until it ecevntually becomes a habit. And then you will start living for the moment.

I dont understand what nirvana means. But for me this is what it is

Liked the central theme --"Seize the Moment" , however like the author says it is a concept that is supremely difficult to implement, nevetheless i believe its neccessary, cos otherwise we can get caught in a time wrap...which is dangerous ......... memories of the past giving way to an empty future unless we truly "Seize the Moment" n live it ...cos even reliving fond memories of the past over n over again can be like a drug...u can get addicted to the sweet comfort it envelops u with...n get lulled into wasting away the present...

another aspect which i think is a very original thought by the author is about making the present your "friend"....i realise in this context it has been used as a metaphor...however it can also signify that when u befriend ur present - u are no longer scared to live the present to the fullest n accept whatever be the consequences of ur actions...heres hoping u achieve ur nirvana Stevan!
